Serara Lodge…Part 2

Picking up where I left off yesterday,we landed at a dirt airstrip about an hour from the lodge and were driven to the lodge. On the way we saw the third type of giraffe, the Reticulated Giraffe, as well as several elephants. The area was surrounded by mountains that made for great landscape shots.

Serara Lodge offered several amenities not available in Amboseli. The first was internet access…sort of. It work sporadically and slowly so not much got posted from there. They did have a gift shop selling, among other things, jewelry so Nancy was able to meet the need to feed that addiction. In fairness, I did buy some gifts to bring back to the office so she wasn’t the only one helping the local tribal economy. There was a couple of tame Lesser Kudos at the lodge that wandered around looking for food and letting people pet them. There were also Horn Bills that would fly into the lounge area and eat from your hand.

Everywhere we went outside the main areas of the lodge, we were accompanied by a ranger carrying a G3 battle rifle. I was told this was not for the animals, but rather for poachers and kidnappers! Very reassuring.  There was a small waterfall a short walk from the lodge that was flowing fast due to all the rains. We walked through the woods to get to it passing a dead cobra on the way. The eagle that had just killed it was scared off by our approach and was waiting in a nearby tree for us to leave. When we got to the falls, Craig and Tom went sliding down it. It was too cold for me so I just took pictures.

Tomorrow I will tell you about night time game rides.
