Africa…There and Back Again… A Photographer’s Story

Ok, so the title is a bad take off on The Lord of the Rings. This is my first post on this blog and it is about as good as I can get it right now.

My name is Dave Bardt. I am a 58 year old civil engineer and serious photographer. At this point it is 22 days before we leave for Kenya on Safari. This site will document the last few days before we leave and I will share images when we get back.

At this point most of the new camera gear has been obtained; just 1 or 2 things left to get so I’m off to The Pro Shop for Photographers in West Palm Beach tomorrow.

So what does the well prepared photographer bring to Africa to capture those perfect images? I’m not sure, but at least I know what I am going to bring. First let me say that this was almost the biggest problem at the beginning of the trip. The original restrictions I was given limited me to 25 pounds of luggage which didn’t even give me enough weight for my cameras, much less any clothes besides what was on my back when I left Florida. The good news is the guide, Derek Dames, lifted that restriction for me as I was a photographer. I am not supposed to tell, so let’s keep it our secret 😉

So on to a gear list. This is what I will bring. When I get back, I will tell you what I really should have brought.

1 Canon 5d MkII

1 Canon 7d

1 580 EX Flash

1 Canon 24-105mm f4 L

1 Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS

1 Canon 2x III extender

1 Benro TRCB 169 Tripod

Extra Batteries

Circular Polarizing filters

Neutral Density Filters

Lots of Compact Flash Cards and a card reader

1 MacBook Pro

1tb external hard drive

rain covers

All packed into a Think Tank Streetwalker.

Like I said, this wasn’t going to work at 25 pounds. When I first weighed it, it was at 22 pounds and that was before the tripod and computer was added.

I am so excited for your trip to Africa. You’re going to have a blast! Since, I know you are a serious photograhper. I’m truly looking forward to seeing your photos. I want to experience your safari with you and will be logging on each and everyday that you’ll there to share your exciting adventures. I do have one question: What are you going to do about your weight restriction? I believe that’s going to be an issue, but hopefully you’ll be able to work something out! Well, have fun and be safe! Walter

We are all waiting with bated breath for the first picture, please make sure that you are not intent on clicking as the animal is charging. If by chance it is, just make sure that is focused before you snap it, I hate blurry pictures. Wish we were all going with you, what a blast!
